Freezing Beauty
Style Rule #1: Never be married to a trend.
LIFESTYLE - Temperatures are averaging about 10 degrees in Brockton, Massachusetts and are no fairy tale to deal with after the Blizzard of 2013 hit this weekend. Most of us were in survival mode and thinking nothing about what we look like as we climb over and shovel through 2-3'+ piles of snow. Now that the blowing snow and ferocious winds have subsided, fashion is once again important, at least for the fashion-conscious consumer. If you're thinking your favorite sweats and winter boots seem to be the easiest and warmest fashion options available let me change your mind.
There's one thing New Englanders can be sure of and it's that the winters are unpredictable at best. I can't tell you how many pair of boots have been ruined by slush and salt mixtures or how limited I feel when deciding what I can wear when the weather is just unbearably cold or wet. I'm often conflicted when choosing between my fashionable sensibilities and wanting to stay dry or warm when the temps reach below freezing. New England weather is definitely suited for someone who likes freezing cold air and snowfall... I dread winter! I have always despised the weather, but haven't mustered up enough courage to move south of the border yet and so I'm left with the proverbial lemons of making due with whatever Mother Nature deals each winter.
Trending this winter season for ladies are oversized sweaters, leggings and tall boots, but not your everyday, garden-variety winter boots. Oh no! I'm here to give you options. If you're opting for a winter boot that is also stylish, then I suggest a pair with fur for warmth and a rubber sole for traction. If you don't wear real fur, there are hundreds of affordable, faux fur options available from fur vests to muffs to boots. The options are virtually limitless as fur is definitely in this season. I nabbed a pair of faux fur boots that are super warm and comfy, not to mention functional and fashionable. I purchased them on sale for $14 at the Shoe Dept. (formerly located in Westgate Mall) about a year ago.
Ladies, rock those fur boots with black leggings, a black, curve-hugging mini skirt or even pleated shorts (optional), add an oversized, chunky cream-colored sweater and gold jewelry. The look is simple yet classic, comfortable, and chic.
With the exception of leggings and boots (depending on whether or not you will consider wearing "used" footwear) all these items can be thrifted affording you a very modern take on the trend at under $50 for the entire look. And if you're a bit into the extra-eccentric and over-the-top style, a fur vest over that chunky sweater is sure to draw attention and make you feel like a celebrity.
There's no reason you have to spend a ton of money on clothes that look great. I'll be honest with you a little over 90% of my wardrobe is thrifted, second-hand, or bought on clearance. I refuse to pay retail for something I can find less expensive and more unique at a second-hand shop.
When it comes to fashion, incorporate trends into your personal style that suit your personality, taste and mood and rock it till the wheels come off. If the trend passes and you still feel great in it, keep rocking it.
Style Rule #1: Never be married to a trend. Personal sense of style is much more important and unique to you.
